Event: Diva Dash 5K
Location: Overland Park, KS
I was really looking forward to Diva Dash because the medal was really neat — pink bling bling! I knew this was going to be a rough race but I really had my heart set on finishing it. I had two chiro visits that week and also got a quick soft tissue session at a tent right before the event, so I was hopeful. It was a huge race with a lot of women dressed in tutus and tiaras, and some unfortunate pop music playing at the starting line. The course started and finished in the strip mall mega-complex near the Sprint campus. (I used to work right across the street at Sprint). I started the race at a fast pace and my IT band was feeling good. At mile 1, I was brought to a screeching halt. Instant pain. I really tried to hang in and run/walk the race but the pain was worse and worse. By the end of the race, I was in so much pain just trying to walk that I had tears streaming down my face. A woman threw her arm around me and insisted on helping me the last quarter mile. I hobbled to the finish line and an EMT was waiting for me with a chair and an ice pack.
Not a good race at all, but my family being at the finish line kept me from completely losing it. I was guilty receiving my medal as I felt I didn’t really earn it. I only managed to run a mile of that race. Those around me told me they thought I earned it more than anyone because I didn’t give up and finished the race.
